Maybe there is a special location you share with your fiancé that would be meaningful and memorable for everyone invited to attend—a fly-in fishing camp, for example, or a place where you both love to hike and explore.

Maybe you want to skip out on stressful planning and have a resort planner look after the details for you.

Maybe half your family is from the other side of the world, and it’s easier for everyone to meet in a more central location and choosing an Alaskan cruise ship instead. (By the way, this actually happened and it was the best party ever!)

Whatever your reason for a destination wedding, there are quite a few perks that come with it:

  • Destination weddings can be more cost-effective than traditional weddings. Depending on where you go and whether there is a resort involved, oftentimes your guests will receive room rate discounts. Some resorts even offer free planning services as part of their wedding packages—another big stress reliever. Also, most outdoor locations are so scenic that they require very little decor to dress it up, so you’ll save there, too.
  • You’ll enjoy quality time with loved ones beyond just your wedding day. This one might be my favourite reason for choosing a destination wedding. Whether you choose a 3-day getaway or you’re spending a full week at a resort, the relaxed timeline of a destination wedding allows you to really, truly enjoy the company of your friends and family.
  • Destination weddings are often intimate affairs. Want to keep your guest list trim and create a small, intimate event? You’re not alone. There is a growing trend of couples choosing either to elope or inviting a few select guests to their destination, followed by a reception once they’re happily married and back at home.
  • You can start your honeymoon right away! If you’re already in a beautiful location, why not extend your stay to enjoy some relaxing post-wedding bliss with your new husband or wife.

Whether you’re planning your wedding a few hundred kilometres from home, or you’re itching to escape to somewhere overseas, as long as it’s true to you and your partner, it’s bound to be a beautiful day.

Considering a destination wedding for your big day? Let me know; I’d love to hear your ideas and help you figure out if a destination wedding is a right fit for you!
